05/25/2004 Resolutions 2004-123 I I I RES 0 L UTI 0 N 2004-123 WHEREAS, the City of Grand Island has experienced a serious groundwater contamination problem, resulting in the abandonment of over 80 private domestic wells and a large capacity municipal well; and WHEREAS, four additional municipal wells are in jeopardy of being lost for city supply as the contamination plume continues to move in the area aquifer; and WHEREAS, the source ofthe contamination remains undetermined despite continued work with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and an area business; and WHEREAS, continued efforts must be pursued to determine the source of the contamination and develop remediation programs for the chemical plume; and WHEREAS, the City of Grand Island is requesting that this area be designated as a Superfund Site under the federal Superfund program administered by the Environmental Protection Agency in order to make it eligible for continued investigation and remediation; and WHEREAS, it is recommended that a petition be submitted to the Governor for the State of Nebraska requesting the Governor to list this area as the "Parkview Well Superfund Site." NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA, that due to the ongoing water contamination issue in the Parkview well area in Grand Island, which affects private and municipal water wells, the City of Grand Island supports the designation that such area be listed as the "Parkview Well Superfund Site", making it eligible for continued investigation and remediation. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Mayor is hereby authorized and directed to submit a petition on behalf of the City of Grand Island, to the Governor for the State of Nebraska requesting such site be designated as a Superfund site.
