11/18/2003 Resolutions 2003-344 I I I RES 0 L UTI 0 N 2003-344 WHEREAS, at the City Council Study Session on October 21, 2003, the Police Department provided a presentation on the proposed police canine unit which would consist oftwo animals and their handlers; and WHEREAS, at this time the police department IS seeking approval for the implementation of such canine unit; and WHEREAS, training for the officers and handlers will be completed at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center at no cost to the city; and WHEREAS, the start-up costs for the animals, shelters, kennels, vehicle conversion, veterinarian, food, muzzles, and leashes is estimated at $15,000, and approximately $5,500 has been donated so far to cover such expenses; and WHEREAS, no further funds are required to be budgeted for the present fiscal year for the implementation of such police canine unit; and WHEREAS, it is recommended that such police canine unit be authorized and approved. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA, that the police canine unit consisting of two animals and their handlers is hereby authorized and approved.
