RES 0 L UTI 0 N 2001-61
WHEREAS, Grand Island was originally located on a large island, Le Grande Isle,
which was formed by the north and south channels of the Platte River; and
WHEREAS, Hall County and the City of Grand Island are underlain by an excellent
aquifer of high quality groundwater; and
WHEREAS, the groundwater supply has been developed to supply not only all the
domestic, municipal, and industrial uses in the county, but has been extensively developed for
irrigation; and
WHEREAS, promotion and education concerning our groundwater and the
environment is provided through the Children's Groundwater Festival held in Grand Island on an
annual basis; and
WHEREAS, attendance and participation at the Children's Groundwater Festival by
fourth and fifth grade students from across Nebraska have taught these children about groundwater
and related resources in a fun and interactive atmosphere; and
WHEREAS, it is recommended that the City of Grand Island be designated "The
Groundwater Capital of the World."
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA, that the City of Grand Island is hereby designated
as the "The Groundwater Capital of the World."
Adopted by the City Council of the City of Grand Island, Nebraska on March 13, 2001.
