WHEREAS, Millennium Trails is designed to catalyze the development of trails
across America by bringing together diverse groups of people to recognize, support and celebrate
trails and their capacity to link places and connect our nation's people with their land, history and
culture; and
WHEREAS, trails provide citizens with excellent recreation, educational and
transportation opportunities, preserve critical open space, create natural corridors with wildlife and
enhance the communities they touch; and
WHEREAS, there is a profound relationship between people, place, and trails; and
WHEREAS, artists, cultural and heritage organizations enhance the ability of trails
to unite our citizens in understanding and appreciating our diverse cultural heritage, empowering
them to honor the past and imagine the future; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA, that
1.
The City of Grand Island recognizes Millennium Trails as a significant public/private
partnership that allows communities to strengthen their quality of life by preserving open
spaces, interpreting history and culture and enhancing recreation and tourism.
2. The City of Grand Island extends great appreciation to the millions of individuals who
contribute to trails and the cultural life of our nation directly through their donations, public
service and leadership in every community.
3. The City of Grand Island acknowledges with sincere gratitude the leadership and investment
on the part of businesses, government agencies and foundations that provide the human,
financial, and material resources for trails and our cultural life.
4. The City of Grand Island commits itself and encourages all those at the federal, state and
local levels to strengthen leadership and increase support for a sustainable network oftrails
and their cultural values for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future
generations, thereby defining our legacy as a nation.
