April 2017 Our library is joining thousands of other libraries across America in this year’s celebration, as we offer an increasing variety of “containers” for lifelong learning and literacy – from traditional fare such as books to digital eBooks, eZines and so much more. We join libraries and librarians that open a world of possibilities to all of you through innovative STEAM programing, maker spaces, job-seeking resources and the power of reading. We join all our nation’s libraries that work to serve all members of our increasingly diverse cities, towns and counties, offering services and educational resources that transform communities, open minds and promote American values of inclusion and diversity. And we join every library that stands for free access to information as well as the pursuit of authentic, verifiable facts for an informed citizenry capable of handling real news as it happens in our precious democracy. This year our honorary National Library Week chair is Julie Foudy, retired professional soccer player, two-time World Cup champion, and a medalist in the 1996, 2000, and 2004 Olympics. This soccer hall of famer, reporter, motivational speaker, sports leadership academy founder, and head of the Julie Foudy Leadership Foundation, works to empower young women from all socioeconomic backgrounds to become leaders who positively impact their communities. And you can add author to her resume this May when her first book “Choose to Matter” comes out. Go to www.gilibrary.org and click on this icon for a handy list of National Library Week activities. On Monday, April 10 take a leap forward in your support of our library by learning more about volunteer opportunities and making your volunteer commitment. On Wednesday, come back to the library for a Volunteer Appreciation Day luncheon from 11:30 am to 1 pm, and ice cream sundaes for teen volunteers from 4 to 5 pm. Who knows, someday you might be receiving a statewide library volunteer certificate at the annual Nebraska Library Association Advocacy Day in Lincoln. State Senator Dan Quick made such a presentation to story time volunteer Deb Barth on March 21!   2  FRIEND YOUR LIBRARY MONDAY & WEDNESDAY Check around the house to see if you have any library materials overdue and not yet returned. If so, get them back anytime this week and your overdue fines will be waived. What a deal! Sorry, this doesn’t include fines from previously returned items. You have a special opportunity to do so on Tuesday the 11th during National Library Workers Day. We’ll return the favor on Thursday during our Patron Appreciation Day with a special treat from 2 –4 pm. We are honored to be of service to you! LIBRARIES TRANSFORM YEAR ROUND AND THROUGH TIME Our public library, founded in 1884 with the basic mission of a lifetime of learning and literacy for our community, has been transforming the lives of children, teens and adults as well as enhancing our community’s vitality in so many ways. We are an essential component of city operations, extend our services county-wide and beyond, spur this community’s quality of life and economic strength, and along with thousands of libraries we are transforming this nation with services to make you better-read, better-educated, and better-informed. The first National Library Week was in 1958 and we’re still inviting you to Wake Up to the transformative power of your public library! Grand Island Regular Meeting - 4/17/2017 Page 22 / 34   4  On Friday the 14th we’re spending the day encouraging our community to join our new book club. The first book on our reading list is “Recollections of a Pioneer Lawyer” by O. A. Abbott, father of these two native Grand Island sisters who went on to become pioneers in social service education and public policy. In partnership with the And to finish off National Library Week ... Oscar Rios Pohirieth presents “Andean Folk Music and Cultures of South America” Why use and support our library all year round? Staff Contact: Grand Island Regular Meeting - 4/17/2017 Page 31 / 34 Library Board Meeting April 17, 2017 Item F.1 Approval of Reduction in Hours of Operation Our library has adopted a uniform year-round schedule of hours open to the public. Due to the forecasted budget reduction of $150,000, the library has not filled the equivalent of 1.5 FTE in vacant staff positions. One FTE is in the Library Assistant position, the other 1/2 FTE in the Page position. The Library Director recommends a reduction in hours of operation, effective Monday, April 24, 2017 as follows: Current Total Recommended Total Monday 9 am - 9 pm 12 9:30 am - 8 pm 10.5 Tuesday 9 am - 9 pm 12 9:30 am - 8 pm 10.5 Wednesday 9 am - 9 pm 12 9:30 am - 8 pm 10.5 Thursday 9 am - 9 pm 12 9:30 am - 8 pm 10.5 Friday 9 am - 6 pm 9 9:30 am - 6 pm 8.5 Saturday 9 am - 5 pm 8 9:30 am - 5 pm 7.5 Sunday 1 pm - 5 pm 4 1 pm - 5 pm 4 69 62 Past experience has shown us that reductions in hours of operation are necessary when reductions in staffing occur during budget shortfalls. Like other departments, personnel costs are the highest portion of our budget, and our operating budget is already significantly lower than it was in 2010. Any change in hours of operation affects library services since access equals opportunity for our community. In years past we have started at the fringes of our schedule, and I recommend the same practice as we solve immediate needs of: • adequate coverage of service stations • staff time needed for background tasks, prepare for programming, etc. • good quality services while we are open • general welfare, coordination and communication to support staff team efforts As budget preparation proceeds, I will be making recommendations as needed to ensure the most sustainable path forward in terms of library hours and services. ________________________________________ Steve Fosselman, Library Director Grand Island Regular Meeting - 4/17/2017 Page 32 / 34 Library Board Monday, April 17, 2017 Regular Meeting Item F2 Approval to Proceed to Negotiations with The Clark Enersen Partners, Lincoln, NE for Architectural Services – Design of Renovations The Library's Building Committee will be reporting its findings at the meeting, and is recommending that the Library and City work toward a successful contract negotiation with The Clark Enersen Partners, Lincoln, NE and with the goal of City Council contract approval within the next month.
