City of Grand Island City Council Item -1 Fire Station #1/Fire Training Site Presentation Tuesday, June 15, 2004 Study Session City of Grand Island Staff Contact: Jim Rowell City of Grand Island City Council Council Agenda Memo From: Jim Rowell, Fire Chief Meeting: June 15, 2004 Subject: Site Selections for Fire Station and Training Center Presenter(s): Jim Rowell, Fire Chief Curt Rohling, Operations Division Chief Troy Hughes, Training Division Chief Background Council has directed that we accomplish the actions which were supported by the May 11, 2004 ballot approving the half cent sales tax. The construction of a training center and the replacement of Fire Station One are the priority projects for the Fire Department. Discussion Division Chiefs Curt Rohling and Troy Hughes will present a report on the progress of the two projects and review the steps taken in the process to reach the conclusions and recommendations offered. The input of the members of the department has been solicited and will continue to be welcome as we move into the design stage of the projects. Visits to existing training centers and fire stations are planned. These site visits will provide valuable information on the design and construction of these facilities. The establishment of a committee to assist in the development of these projects was completed by council action last week and this committee will have a regular meeting schedule in the weeks following tonight’s council meeting. The committee will help with developing the time line for the project and review of documents including proposals and building plans. Additionally, the committee will allow for appropriate public input on the project during the Study Session. Site alternatives will be presented for both Fire Station #1 and the Fire Training Center. The Council will be asked to provide comment on the sites for further action.
